WHAT THE PRESS SAYS
Yells at Eels, the Dallas jazz trio mainstay who are nothing if not the most consistently rewarding live act in the city. Drummer Stefan Gonzalez has bloomed into a figure of consummate versatility; Older brother Aaron Gonzalez has continued to firm up his chops on bass, a year improved from where he was last year; And Dennis Gonzalez is still doing what he does best: playing the trumpet better than anyone this side of anywhere.
-Jonathan Patrick, The Dallas Observer
On Wind Streaks in Syrtis Major, two sides of the same coin: the two bassists playing against each other, arco countering pizzicato - find their match, as the quintet develops a swing beat that can accommodate the congested winds of madness as well as it can assimilate the persistent fragments of melody. In these two vinyl discs, González and sons find in their Polish counterparts two partners in the higher levels of musical art.
-Le Son Du Grisli
The group formed in 1999 initiated by brothers Aaron and Stefan, at a time when their father, the legendary Dennis Gonzalez, had pulled out of the music scene after a period of great international renown to give priority to his visual art, his writing, and his teaching. Starting with their first record, Home (2000), all the way through the present, these objectives and rituals have continued under the strong influence of the substantial creative universe of the multi-faceted artist Dennis Gonzalez. Their imagery is circumscribed by the use of multiple instruments and the voices of the trio of musicians, along with whistles, shakers, and cries that signal the primary function of this music: to scare away demons.
-Sofia Freire, Magnetica Magazine, Lisbon
I don’t know how old the Gonzalez boys are but they certainly make for a rhythm section of considerable punch and precision. The material that Yells At Eels negotiate is of the caliber that we’ve come to expect from Gonzalez senior. He was one of the driving forces behind Silkheart records, cutting a string of superlative albums himself. This brings a rougher, raw edge to Gonzalez’ universe, yet there is no dilution of the strong melodic beauty of the leader’s themes in the process.
